Merry Christmas to you and yours! The home you are entering was built in the summer of 1896 by Thomas Coke Johnson Jr (1858-1901) and his wife, Mary “Mamie” Swint Johnson (1871-1927). Together, they had three children who themselves have stellar histories and relatives throughout this Coweta County area. Newnan was a burgeoning, expanding city around the time this home was built in 1896. The architecture of the home is described as “Country Farmhouse” which was consistent with the surrounding terrain at time of building. Coweta County, where this home stands, was one of the wealthiest counties on record in the U.S. The cotton industry was prominent throughout Georgia, and Newnan was a center of commerce and industry during the times. The builder and owner of this original home, along with his family, owned the famous “Johnson’s Hardware” store and warehouse here in Newnan. That family ownership spanned some 70 years. The business pre-dated the building of this home, and it was located on the Newnan town square just 3 blocks south of this home. That business employed hundreds of Newnan residents throughout its business lifetime from the late 1800’s into the middle1940’s. The famous Country singer / songwriter, Alan Jackson, wrote a song called, “The Little Man” and the song speaks prominently about Johnson’s Hardware on the square. Alan Jackson is a home town resident and hero for Newnan and his mural is displayed on the outside of the local restaurant on the square, “Redneck Gourmet”. Enjoy our home and its historical ambience in the annals of Newnan, City of Homes....
