On June 7, 1901, the Herald and Adviser newspaper printed that, “Mr. W.W. Spence has commenced the erection of a handsome two-story home on his Greenville Street lot.” William Word and Leila Spence completed this spectacular Victorian home incorporating the highest quality of crafted woodwork, custom tile, heart pine floors and exquisite stained glass. Of particular note,, is the remarkable architectural design that includes oval rooms with curved windows, rounded corners in the living room, and eleven distinctive fireplaces throughout the house. The front porch boasts a solid set of white marble steps and tongue and groove pine on the ceiling and floor. Another favorite feature is the beautiful view of downtown Newnan from the northern windows. Census records indicate that several families, as well as many tenants and boarders, have called 107 Greenville Street home. At some point, a wall was constructed that divided the house into two separate dwellings. In 2011, Ellen Glasgow purchased the home and began the thorough task of renovation, with the goal of lovingly restoring the house with historical integrity. Having fallen in love with the house, Ellen’s parents, Mike and Julia Barber, purchased the home from her when the Glasgows’ jobs required a move to Chattanooga in 2016. The Barbers completed the renovation, adding a custom kitchen, central heat and air, and a covered deck on the rear of the house. They have just finished another painstaking restoration necessitated by the tornado in March, 2021. Most of the almost two acre lot was devastated in that storm, and work continues to refurbish the landscape design. Currently, Pam Griner resides on the first floor. With her love of decorating, her space will be filled with the magic of Christmas! The spacious upstairs is offered as a short-term rental or reserved for visits and events for the extended families of the Barbers and their four daughters.
