This 1908 Folk Victorian has been the home of the Miles family for over 35 years. It was one of four houses in the West Washington and College Street area that were owned by Mrs. Willie B. Treadaway. These houses were believed to have originally been built as family homes for Mrs. Treadaway and her daughters. Some of the houses, including the Miles home, were converted into apartments sometime around the depression era and remained that way for many years. The Miles home went through serveral changes and owners over the years, existing both as an apartment house and a family home. By the time the Miles bought it in 1985, most of the original architectural features had been stripped, hardwood floors were covered in beige carpet and the walls were sheet-rocked and painted white. The Miles have spent many years restoring the house and bringing it back to period while including modern conveniences. Mr. Miles is the owner of locally based RDR Contracting and his work can be seen throughout the house. The feel and appearance the Miles have strived for in their renovations is that of an original family home which has retained elements of each previous generation and era. The family’s favorite room of the house is the welcoming front porch which features the original bead board ceiling and a handmade black walnut porch swing that has been in the family for many years. As you walk through the house, you will see original heart pine flooring, 11 foot ceilings, a tiger-oak fireplace mantel, antique working gas heaters and over 30 antique lighting fixtures and lamps that the Miles have collected and personally restored. Recently renovated was the downstairs bedroom into an entertainment/guest room. The closed fireplace box in this room was opened up and the long ago lost mantel was replaced with a mantel from the 1890’s home of Mr. Miles’ uncle in East Tennessee. The large walk-in kitchen pantry was updated this year. The pantry is believed to be original to the house. The breakfast room and deck were added in 1994.
