New to Newnan in 2018, the residents of 38 W Washington St have only begun to discover the history of this house. Dating back to 1900, this lot and several others nearby were owned by the Samuel W. Murray family. Mr. Murray was a prominent businessman in the printing business, one of the largest in the state. The print business operated just 2 blocks away at 11 W Washington St in the Murray Warehouse Block building. The warehouse building was constructed in 1895 and purchased later by Murray. It still stands today across the street from the present day Alamo bar/restaurant and Domino’s Pizza building, and it still bears his name at the top. The home at 38 W Washington was built by Murray around 1900. The original lot boundaries extended further back than current boundaries and included chicken coops and horse stables. Boundaries changed over time. The current residents added a detached garage in 2018 at the rear of the lot. Renovations have been performed in decades past by previous owners. Hidden evidence of the original home details can be found in the attic chimney above and between the kitchen and guest bedroom with no fireplace visible below it or above the roof line. Additional element of the original home has been found in the lath and fibrous plaster walls with horsehair plus wallpaper from another time. This hidden treat rises 4 feet above the guest bedroom ceiling and is then covered by additional attic floor. A portion of the lath, plaster, and wallpaper can be seen framed on the guest bedroom wall. The current owners are hopeful to peel back some of the renovations to uncover and restore a bit of the original 1900 charm of this home, and more of Mr. Murray’s original vision.
